Help On Connecting To AustChat
Many people always say to us "I got here by accident, how do I come back?". Connecting to an IRC Network is a fairly simple task depending on the "Client" used to connect. Some IRC clients or scripts have a default network they will connect to on startup. Whilst this is fine for beginners, it makes it difficult for someone new to IRC to navigate around the various networks and find a place they are comfortable chatting on.
Most IRC Networks have a default address, often this is also refered to as a "round robin" connecting to this one address can randomly take you to any of the network's IRC servers, if one server is offline you will continue to cycle through the available servers until one is online.
AustChat's round robin address is "irc.austchat.net"
To change to a particular server you can type in any IRC client the following command:
/server ircserver.hostname
So to connect to AustChat's round robin server you would type the following command:
/server irc.austchat.net
If you wish to connect to a particular server on a particular network you can substitute the round robin hostname for the individual server's hostname for example:
/server playboy.austchat.net
This will connect you to our playboy.austchat.net IRC server, most networks have more than one server connected together to make up a network of servers, switching from one to another is as easy as using the /server command like the above examples.
This is just a basic example of how to connect to and switch to an IRC server, for more detailed help on connecting to networks and IRC servers consult your IRC client's documentation.
